On January 19th, 2023, the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI), Hungary, invited stakeholders of the pig and poultry sector involved in precision livestock farming (PLF) to a focus group discussion, which exceeded all expectations with a successful and productive event.
The event was attended by 21 participants from business (farmers, PLF developers and distributors), academia and policy makers. The focus group was primarily aimed at defining the attitude of pig and poultry farmers towards information and communication technologies (ICT).
Three focus groups were held to discuss issues that allowed the project researchers to take a multi-stakeholder approach. From the successful conducted discussions, the LivestockSense project has achieved valuable insight and understanding of:
- The practical experiences of ICT use in the pig and poultry livestock sectors,
- The main characteristics of pig and poultry farms using smart technologies,
- Identification of main barriers to the uptake of ICT technologies,
- Outline of possible solutions to stimulate the application of these technologies.
LivestockSense have scheduled focus groups across the partners in the project, and will also host focus group events in Estonia, Sweden, Israel, and Denmark. The Polish focus group was held in December 2022, which you can read about here.
